Alaska State Troopers told the AP that 26-year-old Mavaega Tautua had been housed at the Spring Creek Correctional Center and had been transported to Anchorage for medical treatment.

Troopers say he died just before 1 p.m. March 3.

Tautua in 2011 was convicted of felony assault in a high-profile downtown Anchorage case. He was found guilty of two counts of assault and one of weapons misconduct in a 2010 shooting outside the former Rumrunners Old Towne Bar and Grill.
