Cancer support fundraiser is a weekend of fun

Three days of fun and fundraising is planned for this weekend in Seward. It's Polar Bear Jumpoff weekend.

Over 100 people who have collected pledges will dress in wacky costumes and jump in the frigid bay to raise money for the American Cancer Society and Children with Cancer on the Kenai Peninsula.

The main event – the Jumpoff – starts at 12:30 p.m. Saturday and the Small Boat Harbor takes on a festival atmosphere.

Before the Jumpoff an auction is held, a poker tournament, good eats at Seward Senior Center and the American Legion and live music around town.

Saturday will feature not only the Jumpoff, but there's a parade, a community breakfast and a quilt show. Right before the Jumpoff is a parade. Then the fun continues with a children's carnival with games and activities, a seafood feed and an auction for children with cancer.

Entertainment and an awards ceremony is slated for the afternoon, followed by a taping of the "Big Alaska Show" with audience participation.

On Sunday another community breakfast is planned. As is the Locks of Love hair cut off with the hair donated for wigs for people with cancer.

Back this year is the reindeer from Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center. It'll be at the Jumpoff on Saturday and in the parade.

Also this year, the Breeze Inn has changed the oyster slurp contest to an oyster fest on Saturday, and anyone can join in.

Other weekend events include Wii bowling, waiter/waitress contest, and a Karaoke contest.

Meals will served at all restaurants along with fundraiser meals at the American Legion and Seward Senior Center.
