Clara LaRock, sophomore

Seward High School's Debate, Drama and Forensic team competed over the weekend at the South Anchorage High School DDF Tournament.

The Seahawks did well in events from the many categories. In DDF competitions students not only debate but they also perform dramatic or humorous pieces.

Seniors Moriah and Susannah Doepken came home with first place for their Duo Interpretation of "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying."

The Duo Interpretation is 10 minutes long and consists of selections from a published novel, short story, play or poetry. The material must be memorized and no props are allowed.

The Seahawk team took second place in Readers' Theater with "Matt Foley, Motivational Speaker."

Overall the Seahawks took fifth place in the competition with about 10 schools, many of them much larger than Seward High.

"Fabulous!" is how coach James Wayne described the team. "We have excellent seniors and the team is great at coaching themselves."

There are 23 or 24 students on the Seahawks team and 19 of them competed at the South High Tournament.

The team's next event is Jan. 8 and 9 in Nikiski.

Event categories at Alaska's DDF tournaments include Policy Debate, Lincoln-Douglas Debate, Public Forum Debate, Original Oration, Extemporaneous - All, Extemporaneous Speaking - Foreign and Domestic, Extemporaneous Commentary, Expositor Speaking, Readers' Theatre, Dramatic Interpretation, Pantomime, Humorous Interpretation, Duet Acting, Solo Acting and Duo Interpretation.
