'Captain's Mast' - Oct. 8, 2015

 


The following is from the journals of the Seward Police Department. Those who have been arrested or summoned are presumed innocent until found guilty in a court of law.

Sept. 20

22:09 - Clerk at Chevron reported a male had been sleeping in the bathroom. When he woke he entered the store and it could be seen that he had injuries to his face, and that he was intoxicated. He left heading south on Third. Officers contacted Steven Surber outside Harbor 360. He was taken to the Marina Motel for identification. Surber was arrested for Assault IV after he was identified as the suspect in an earlier case. He was taken to SCJ with a PBT of .218

22:13 - Breeze Inn Hotel reported that a male who was intoxicated and sleeping on the couch in the lobby. It was unknown if he was a guest at the hotel. Officer contacted the subject who was a guest at the Breeze Inn and assisted him to his room.

Sept. 21

00:34 - Individual reported an intoxicated pedestrian who refused to leave Safeway after closing hours and was making threats to store staff. Officers arrested John Ringhand on charges of criminal trespass and disorderly conduct. PBT .220.

12:36 - Troopers arrested Edwin Demott on an AST Warrant ($5,000, FTA, OC DUI) at Salmon Creek Trailer Court and took him to SCJ.

16:15 - Individual reported he left his backpack in a cab the night before. It had his medication for seizures and two silver salmon.

16:04 - Individual reported someone broke into one of the dorm rooms and stayed a couple of nights. They broke a window while gaining entry. Cameras picked up three subjects. Mariia Lautenshlager was arrested and taken to SCJ

16:10 - Individual gave an officer medication for destruction.

19:10 - An ambulance was requested at the airport to transport the crew to the hospital

21:55 - SAST requested SPD assistance at Salmon Creek Road. Troopers also requested that an ambulance stage in the area due to the code black call for a physical fight. All units staged at Salmon Creek and Nash Road waiting for the trooper who was responding from Sunrise.

23:22 - Troopers arrested Nicolette Irene Arnold and took her to SCJ.

23:50 - Trooper advised that a male was reported to have left the Pit Bar intoxicated in a small, black two-door truck headed southbound. SPD Officers responded but were unable to locate the vehicle.

Sept. 22

00:42 - 911 caller Mychal Taylor requested an officer at Sixth. His girlfriend was screaming in the background and Taylor could not provide further information. Officers contacted both parties. Taylor was arrested for DV Assault IV and DV Criminal Mischief V and taken to SCJ. Charges for Criminal Mischief V against the girlfriend were forwarded to the DA.

07:57 - Individual reported AVTEC students had been driving by Dora Way and making shooting hand gestures to his daughter. The investigation was ongoing.

07:58 - Officer requested case for DWLR for subject who was seen driving at Mile 3.5 Seward Highway.

09:06 - Officer provided transport for a SCJ inmate to PSMC for medical evaluation.

09:30 - Elementary school conducted a fire drill.

09:58 - The middle school requested an officer for a student who was combative and cornered in a room.

11:12 - ACO and officer requested case number for animal neglect on Fourth.

22:15 - Citation for failure to carry proof of insurance issued to Steven L. Fox on Seward Highway at North Harbor. Verbal warning for speed.

22:48 - John Bertrand turned himself in on a warrant and was booked into SCJ.

Sept. 23

12:32 - Court turned in a Visa debit card found on the bench.

12:37 - Verbal warning for unsafe passing given at Lowell Point Road.

13:40 - Individual turned in medication to be destroyed.

17:23 - A burglary was reported at Afognak Avenue. The resident was out of town for a few days and his home was broken into.

19:21 - An automated fire alarm was received from the Breeze Inn Hotel. False alarm.

20:35 - Individual reported that a vehicle rolled down Washington and hit another vehicle.

21:52 - Individual reported that kids dressed in black were skate boarding down Third. Officer contacted two subjects and advised them that there was no skate boarding allowed in the streets.

Sept. 24

11:10 - PSMC conducted a fire drill.

11:10 - Individual turned in a bike that was left by the dump road.

13:56 - Verbal warning for leaving the roadway given at the top of Dora.

14:24 - Alarm activated at the court office. Officer advised that a male was upset about his PFD being garnished for court fees.

15:22 - Individual turned in expired medication to be destroyed.

23:11 - Officers investigated a break in at Afognak Avenue.

Sept. 25

05:34 - Citation for speed issued to Rachel Allen at Seward Highway and Hemlock.

07:19 - Individual reported an alarm going off at Subway.

09:52 - Individual requested an officer to Ash and Afognak for a white Dodge pickup that was backed into the woods and looked suspicious. Officer did a security check in the area and up to the Japp Creek Water Tower, and all was OK.

10:55 - Individual requested an officer to Afognak for a theft. Officer advised it was a follow up to a former case.

11:27 - Sean Schmelzer turned himself in at city hall for a SAST warrant ($500, Obstruct Court Order, Fail to Comply Conditions Probation, OC DUI/PTRP). Officer took him to SCJ.

11:33 - Officer requested case number for several shoplifting complaints at Safeway.

15:35 - Fire chief requested BCVFD be dispatched to Nautical Avenue for a CO detector sounding. BCVFD dispatched.

17:21 - Citation for speed issued to Tabatha Vikdal at Third and D.

18:45 - 911 caller requested an ambulance to Ray’s Waterfront.

19:29 - Citation for speed issued to David Gifford at Third and D.

20:03 - Citation for speed issued to Melanie Hinkle on the Seward Highway near the Chamber of Commerce.

20:16 - Citation for head light requirements issued to Hunter Doan at No Sweatt Auto. Verbal warning given for driving with parking lights illuminated after dark.

21:59 - Several 911 callers reported gunshots in the downtown area. Officer advised that they were fireworks and drove around the area to discourage further discharge.

Sept. 26

03:46 - 911 caller reported a verbal argument in the parking lot of Pacific Park Apartments. Subjects left the scene while SPD Dispatch was talking with the caller. An hour later the caller reported advised there were six or seven people fighting in the parking lot. Disorderly conduct warnings were given to three subjects.

01:33 - Citation for speed issued to Conglin Wu at Seward Highway and Nash Road.

01:57 - Verbal warning for speed given at Third and Monroe.

02:05 - Individual with Simplex Grinell reported a general fire alarm at Oak Street. SVFD/SVAC dispatched.

02:09 - Officer arrested Austin Gillespie on DUI charges at Seward Highway and Hemlock.

02:26 - Individual requested an officer to the skate park for people using the park after closing time.

08:45 - Citation for speed issued to Heather Rough at Seward Highway and Hemlock.

10:21 - Citation for speed issued to Alfredo Begazo at South Harbor and Seward Highway.

14:40 - Verbal warning for failure to use turn signal in front of the Hotel Seward.

16:48 - Hotel Seward reported that two females were enjoying the hot tub at the Cabin on the Cliff. The two subjects ran and drove away in a maroon 4-runner. The girls were in their late teens, slender, about 5’8”. One was wrapped in a towel and the other had a colorful bathing suit. One was blond, the other brunette with brown eyes.

21:41 - Individual reported children running up and down the halls at Bayside. Other calls were received from other residents. Officer spoke with the resident who said they had a birthday party and would keep the noise down.

21:42 - Individual reported a party in the alley near the post office or the Nazarene church. He said there were drugs and underage drinking at this party. No party was found.

23:26 - Citation for head light requirement issued to Sadie Elizabeth G. Ulma at Seward Highway at Port Avenue.

23:49 - Verbal warning for failure to use turn signal given at Third and South Harbor.

Sept. 27

03:15 - Individual at Williams Campground was yelling and causing a disturbance. A disorderly conduct warning was issued to the subject.

05:13 - Individual at Harbor 360 reported an intoxicated male sleeping in the elevator. Officers took him to his room.

05:38 - While on the previous call, officers contacted another male who was intoxicated and took him to his hotel room.

09:54 - 911 caller requested an officer to the parking lot of Alaska SeaLife Center for a vehicle parked in the exit lane. The caller said she contacted the vehicle owner and advised them they should move, but they refused. Officer reported that the vehicle was not blocking traffic nor causing a hazard.

11:44 - Citation for speed issued to John Cranker at Essential One car wash.

12:02 - Citation for speed issued to Suzanne Worthington at Chamber of Commerce lot.
