Christmas Bird Count is Saturday

Fill your feeders with black oil sunflower seeds, and hang up the suet! It’s time to get ready for the annual Seward Christmas Bird Count. All across the country, citizen scientists will help to gather important information about bird populations, movements, and trends. You too, can help count every bird within a 7.5 mile radius of Nash Road and the intersection of the Seward Highway.

This year’s Seward CBC is Saturday, Dec. 27. Field Counters will meet at 9 a.m. at the Resurrect Art Gallery at 320 Third to confirm their area and team assignments. Be prepared to walk parts of your route, and drive with the car windows open if necessary. Dress for the weather whatever it is, and bring more layers in case; bring lunch, snacks, and beverages for a full day outside. Binoculars, spotting scope, and bird book are helpful. A great attitude is the best tool!

Feeder Watchers should plan to watch their feeders for at least an hour during the day, keeping track of total species seen, and maximum number of each.

Results will be tabulated starting at 4 pm at Resurrect Art. Feeder Watchers are welcome to attend the tally or may email their results.

Keep track of owls (and any other confirmed birds of the night) heard anytime from midnight to midnight on Count Day, Dec. 27. Anyone can email in an owl report.

Count Week is Dec. 24-26, and 28-30. Species seen, or owls heard, on any of these days that were not included on Count Day will be added to the grand list. It is not necessary to count the number of a species seen during the Count Week days. You do not have to participate on Count Day, Dec. 27 to help during Count Week.

Contact Carol at for more information and also to let her know if you plan to participate as a Field Counter, Feeder Watcher, or Count Week Counter. All participants will receive an emailed packet to refer to for their convenience. If you have an active feeder we could check, please let her know.
