Seward's Carrie Anderson gets her hand on a ball during a recent volleyball tournament, giving new coach Jamie Fredrickson an opportunity to evaluate her new team's skills.

Jamie Fredrickson may be the new volleyball coach at Seward High School but she's a veteran volleyball player with coaching experience at the JV level. Fredrickson went to Seward High School and played on the team. Then she did a stint in the military and came back to Seward where she is employed at AVTEC coordinating recreation activities. On top of her full time job, Fredrickson took on the tall task of getting to know a new team and dive right into a lot of tournament action.

"The tournaments have good experience for us," said Fredrickson. "It's given us a chance to experiment and it's given me a chance to evaluate the team's strengths and weaknesses."

Fredrickson said it has helped that eight seniors returned this year and they have a good foundation of fundamental skills. She said the heavy travel schedule can be grueling but again, it gives the team a lot of different experiences. She has high hopes for the season even though she is new. She said she likes what she sees so far.

This week, the team set off for Houston followed by out of town games with ACS, Grace and Nikiski before finally playing before a supportive home crowd on Sept. 26 against Homer.
