Nominations for Historic Preservation Award needed

Seward has quite a history. For over 100 years now its citizens have come and gone; enriching our sense of place with each life and event. Without the hard work and civic pride of those that came before, Seward would not be the exemplary city it is today. And without the people and organizations who gather and preserve our past we have little to guide us into the future.

If you know of an individual or organization that deserves special recognition for their work in preserving Seward history, please take a moment to nominate them for the 2014 Historic Preservation Award. The annual award recipient is selected by the Seward Historic Preservation Commission to recognize local preservation efforts and to encourage community understanding and appreciation of Seward’s history.

If you would like to nominate an individual or organization for this Historic Preservation Award, forms are available at the Library/Museum and the City Clerk’s office. All nominations must be submitted by Tuesday, September 30th, 2014.

Substitute training scheduled

Enough interest was generated for school substitute training to hold a local training session at Seward Elementary School on Se[t. 17 from 10:30 a.m. til 12:30 p.m. This training is for all types of sub positions - teacher, aide, tutor, custodial, kitchen and office for any KPBSD school. Emergency responder course open for registration

The Office of Emergency Management is pleased to announce a new offering of the CERT program training in September to coincide with National Preparedness Month. Please forward this announcement to others who may be interested in the program.

CERT teaches community members to respond in times of disaster, where normal response capability may be overwhelmed. The idea is to provide Alaskans with the means to help themselves and their families. Participants may, once the course is completed, join the structured CERT team which can be called upon to assist in emergencies or disasters, such as the recent Funny River wildfire. However, there is no cost or obligation to take the class. Participants of all ages are welcome, those under 18 should be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

To register for the class, please visit http://www.kpvolunteers.org/soldotna.asp and fill out the online form to sign up. Because this is a pilot course, a minimum/maximum enrollment window is required, in order to obtain a proper sample of feedback. Once the minimum enrollment is reached, participants will receive their course confirmation and instructions for the online portion.
