Duck Derby raises cash for community service

Professional plastic duck catchers snag the winning ducks as they cross the finish line. Even Assistant City Manager Ron Long donned waders and took up his position as a catcher.

This year's Duck Derby did not disappoint a massive crowd at the Lowell Point waterfall Sunday. In just under ten minutes, the duck sponsored by Matt Glazer crossed the finish line first. One second behind him was the speedy duck sponsored by Scott Ruby. Glazer's duck netted him a cool $1000 and Ruby walked away with $500. A large gaggle of ducks sped across the finish line, causing the catchers to work double time in the bay with their state of the art waders and nets.

"We want to thank all the ducks for their contribution to the Rotary Club fundraiser," said Rotary Duck Derby Organizer Lori Draper.

Rumors started swirling immediately after the race that some ducks were refusing to go into Lowell Canyon because the waterfall was so fierce. Eventually, all the ducks did cross the finish line, raising more than $1,000 for community service programs.
