SHS students earn awards, scholarships

Seward High School graduating senior Brooke Estes was the first student to be recognized as the evening program for the SHS Academic and Athletics Awards got underway on Monday. Her first acknowledgment of many came from the Kenai Peninsula Masonic Lodges, as Estes was named the Masonic Outstanding Student of the Year by the group through its local lodge, Seward No 6.

Nicholas Zweifel, probably the evening’s most prolific recipient of awards and scholarships, joined Estes on stage for the beginning of a long line of scholarship recipients.

Salutatorian Zweifel was again called to the stage along with valedictorian Ashley Von Borstel to receive the Athlete of the Year awards.

Laura Kromrey and Tannen Berry were the final students to appear as SHS Principal Trevan Walker bestowed the Seahawks Citizenship awards on them.

Walker concluded the evening’s program by highlighting some numbers he had tallied up over the school year and the course of the scholarship awards. He noted of 170 students enrolled, the numbers engaged in pursuits such as sports, debate and drama, music and student council, Pep Club and the National Honor Society contributed to a mathematical total of 405 students involved in school activities representing a 238 percent participation level in co-curricular activities, up from 204 percent last year.

Walker also observed that the 41 graduates of the SHS Class of 2014 have been offered $447,035 in scholarship funds. Of that total, $52,205 came from local contributions. “At the beginning of this presentation I asked you to consider whether or not our investment was worth it. This clearly signifies what we’ve know all along. The answer has to be, yes. Thank you for your continued presence in the legacy of success that Seward High School continues to enjoy,” Walker said.
