Harbor opening action packed

By the end of the week and Seward Harbor Opening Weekend two cruise ships will have come and gone from the Port of Seward signalling the beginning of the summer visitor season. The first passenger line of the year, the Silver Shadow, arrives and departs today bringing over 300 travellers to the shores of Resurrection Bay. Holland America’s Oosterdam, with a capacity of over 1,800 passengers, will sail in on Sunday for a 14-hour stay.

The formal opening weekend celebration for Seward’s small boat harbor, sponsored by Seward’s maritime merchants, has been a local tradition for years with businesses rolling out the red carpet in mid to late May. Local residents get in on the action as well, swabbing decks and checking lines as the community celebrates the arrival of the outdoor season to the shores of Resurrection Bay.

Harbor activity abounds on Saturday and Sunday, when residents and visitors alike can share in the blessing of the fleet, watch the boat parade, or hop aboard with an open house on the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Mustang and other vessels. Walking the docks can result in a glimpse or more of sea otters and sea lions who are hoping for their own fresh catch. Other activities in and around the marina include business open houses and specials.

It is the beginning of the busy recreational boating season and the Coast Guard will be conducting safety inspections. Don’t forget to put youngsters in a life vest before strolling the floats in the harbor.
