Sleetmute Sweetheart plays Seward

Alaskan singer/songwriter Emma Hill, with four albums in collaboration with co-writer/musician Bryan Daste to her credit, will perform at Resurrect Art Coffee House Friday. She is touring in support of her latest release, “The Black and Wretched Blue,” and will bring her “brand of loping, intimate Americana with an indie edge” to Seward. For information call 224-7161.

Seward team goes to state NYO

The Qutekcak Native Youth Olympics team is set to compete April 24-26, in the 44th Annual NYO Games Alaska at the Dena’ina Center in Anchorage. The annual event brings together young athletes from across Alaska and beyond to test their skill and stamina in Native sporting events. For information call 224-3118.

Balto School is recruiting

The Friends of the Jesse Lee Home and Balto School are looking for candidates to fill two full-time AmeriCorps openings for the 2014-15 term. The Outreach Coordinator and Student Activities Coordinator positions will work with Balto School staff and community partners in outreach and organizing efforts. Bluegrass Camp open for application

Seward’s Bluegrass Camp For Kids is enrolling students ages 5-16 and adults. SBC features a special division for ages 5-7, a camp for ages 8-16, and four evenings of adult workshops. Camp takes place July 7-11 at the Resurrection Lutheran and Seward Methodist churches, with related events at other venues. Sign up at or call 224-6473.

First aid class still open

Applicants can earn their 2-year Medic First Aid certification at a class offered at Seward Middle School from 1:45-5:45 p.m., April 16. The class is open to youth and adults and is well suited to child care workers, including baby sitters and anyone who want to be qualified to offer basic medical assistance. Garden Club hosts seminar

The Resurrection Bay Garden Club presents award-winning Alaska garden designer and author Brenda Adams at 2 p.m., April 19, at the Seward Community Library Museum. Her free presentation “Compelling Combinations - Creating Sizzle and Subtlety” will guide attendees in the use of foliage, color, texture, form and other plant attributes to create combinations that far exceed the beauty of each individual plant. Theater tour comes to town

“The Winter Bear,” a play inspired by the life of Koyukon Athabascan elder Sidney Huntington, will be performed at 7 p.m. on April 23 at Seward High School Theater. Agencies host public conference

A permitting and agency information open house will be conducted from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., April 17, at the Seward Community Library. Agency representatives from the Seward Bear Creek Flood Service Area, City of Seward, Alaska Department of Fish and Game, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Kenai Peninsula Borough and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will be on hand to provide information and assist with summer projects, permit applications. Spring triathlon seeks volunteers

Seward Parks and Recreation Department is seeking adult volunteers to host the Polar Bear Pink Cheeks Triathlon May 2 and 3. Volunteer jobs include lap counters and timers in the swimming pool on Saturday morning to afternoon, traffic control/flaggers, finish line crew, bike queue helpers and monitors, check-in helpers on Saturday morning, chip check-in following the race, clean-up crew throughout the day and other great jobs. Local beaders organize group

The Resurrection Bay Bead Society is a community group dedicated to everything related to jewelry making and beading. Borough requires kindergarten screening

Children who will be four years old by Sept. 1 have an opportunity to attend pre-kindergarten classes at Seward Elementary in the fall. To qualify for the classes, parents or guardians must contact the school to schedule a Pre-K assessment and complete an application prior to the school screening appointment date. The deadline for Seward Elementary is May 6. Call 224-3356 for information.
