Fire scorches SBS paint aisle

According to Bear Volunteer Fire Department training captain Jim Wiles, the paint mixing station at the Exit Glacier Road location of Spenard Builder's Supply spontaneously caught fire early Saturday morning setting off alarms. As the first of two first responders to the scene Wiles says that he didn't immediately see a cause for the alarm. SBS is well equipped with fire and other sensors and they sometimes go off spontaneously.

Upon entering the building, Wiles spotted smoke and fire in the paint aisle. A fire engine from Seward Fire Department responded and the crew was put to work extinguishing the small blaze. It ended up totalling the mixing station, and causing fire and smoke damage to the ceiling. The store was able to open the next day and by Monday, paint cans untouched by the fire a few feet away were for sale on the reopened aisle.

Wiles says that it was just a matter of a couple of minutes before the fire might have ignited nearby paint and turned into a major firestorm.
