Thank you and a correction

Letter to the Editor

Thank you for your article on Feb. 13, in promoting suicide prevention in our Seward Community.

I would like you to make the following correction. In the photo caption of page 12 in your article, you listed my title as “psychiatrist.” The difference between a psychiatrist and a psychologist is confusing to many people. A psychiatrist is a medical doctor, either MD or DO, who has completed a psychiatric residency. Psychiatrists do psychotherapy, and they also prescribe and monitor psychiatric medication.

A psychologist has completed a doctoral program and training in psychology, and after passing national and state licensing requirements is licensed as a psychologist in each state they practice in. (I am licensed and practice in the State of Alaska.) However, I do not prescribe medication, and it is illegal for me to use the title psychiatrist.

Thank you for the opportunity to make this correction.

— Dr. J. Craig Williamson, Licensed Psychologist
