Mayor's Cup delayed

Leon Youngblood | The Seward Phoenix LOG

Seward Phoenix LOG editor Wolfgang Kurtz kicks off from the starting line at last year's Mayor's Cup.

Seward's winter mushing event, the Mayor's Cup, was set for Feb. 15 but ended up in last minute limbo because of a lack of winter. With local mushers Iditarod bound, the race has been postponed until April 5. No one could have predicted the anomalous last minute snowfall after a winter with virtually no usable snow. The Seavey Ididaride Seward kennels did make good use of the snowfall by providing dog sled rides Saturday evening at the Moose Pass Winter Rendezvous.

Entry fees for the the 19th annual running of the Mayor's cup benefit the Seward Iditarod Trail Blazers, whose mission it is to promote the restoration of the Iditarod Trail in the area between Seward and Moose Pass. Competitors will meet to draw for starting position and orientation on April 4 at the traditional pre-race mixer and will be assigned their three-dog team. Entry is restricted to novice mushers as this is an amateur race. Participants are urged to track down underwriters and community sponsors are being sought. For information contact Dan Seavey at 224-3518.
