SHS hosts annual Seahawks Classic invite

Seahawks #24, SHS senior Matthew Moore, flys through the air on his way to a cumulative 15 points during the Saturday game against Valdez.

Three basketball teams including Anchorage's East High School, Eagle River High and Klawock were hosted by the Seward Seahawks during three days of games last weekend. The annual classic is a highlight of the season and visitors were outnumbered by a crowd of Sewardites.

In game play, the Seahawks boys struggled with keeping focus in the final stretch of their three games. They ended up placing fourth of four and the Seahawks girls third of four overall.

In at least two games, the boy's play unravelled during the last quarter as fouls piled up and momentum was lost. It's been the same story throughout the season, with the team coming on hard only to lose a strong position in the final stretch.

However all the teams played well and there were no runaway games except for a little bit of a mismatch between the Eagle River girls and Valdez.

Seahawk Matthew Moore led scoring throughout with Ronnie Jackson not far behind. Tournament MPVs for the Classic are Tannen Berry and Jack Broughton for the Seahawks boys and Ashley von Borstel and Kiana Clemens for the Seahawks girls. The Eagle River boys and the Valdez Buccaneer girls took tournament first place honors.

Day 1 - Boys, Klawock 51, Eagle River 50; Valdez 53, Seward 47; Girls, Eagle River 29, East 45; Valdez 60, Seward 51.

Day 2 - Boys, Klawock 64, Valdez 49; Eagle River 67, Seward 62; Girls, East 57, Valdez 55, Eagle River 15, Seward 38.

Day 3 - Boys, Valdez 53, Eagle River 73; Klawock 55, Seward 49; Girls, East 37, Seward 29; Valdez 60, Eagle River 15.
