Since Sept. 26, five trainees from Bear Creak Volunteer Fire Department along with one from the Seward Volunteer Fire Department have been working toward their final testing regime next week. This follows on the heels of a bumper crop of 16 new graduates coming out of the previous Firefighter I class who will be starting an 18 person Firefighter II training course in January. BCVFD Chief Mark Beals credits excellent instructors and local facilities with helping the training programs. Having the AVTEC live fire training facility is appreciated because the flexibility that it offers in staging different live firefighting scenarios and because of the fact that it's here in Seward. "That's a rare gem because otherwise trainees would have to travel to Kenai," he said.
