Invite sports record number of swimmers

Isabel Barnwell touches down at the end of the girls 500-yard freestyle race with a commanding lead.

Over 200 participants in the 2013 Seward Seahawks Invite saw the Seward High School pool building reverberating with the noise of the crowd and calls of timers, teammates and officials.

Teams attended from high schools around Southcentral Alaska including Anchorage Christian Schools, Cordova, Homer, Central Kenai, Nikiski, Palmer’s Colony High School, Soldotna, Skyview, Wasilla amd Valdez.

The Seahawks team included competitive showings by Seward High School seniors Isabel Barnwell, Jerry Swanson, Hayden Tiner and Rachel Tougas.

Barnwell dominated the girls 500-yard freestyle event, coming within two seconds of the all time Alaska record and she placed third in the Girls 50-yard Freestyle. Barnwell also kicked off the first leg for the Seahawks first place showing in the Girls 200-yard medley relay.

Tougas finished fourth in the exhausting girls 500-yard freestyle event.

Seahawk Olivia Beckham pulled off a first place finish in the Girls 100-yard backstroke.
