Mayoral Candidate Questionnaire - Tim McDonald

Annnette Shacklett | The Seward Phoenix LOG

City of Seward Mayoral candidate Tim McDonald.

Tim McDonald

Seward has miles and miles of water, sewer, roads and electrical infrastructure, much of which needs repair or replacement. How would you rank the need for attention in those areas and, if elected, what would you propose to address any or all of these issues?

Electric infrastructure, roads and sewer/water in that order. Although the immediate emergency is the Lowell Point sewer pond which is running at capacity or above I believe. We must have the capacity to control sewage without dumping raw sewage into Resurrection Bay! We should research methane gassification capture, recycling sludge and capturing and purifying liquids to reduce the waste stream.

Next we have exponential traffic growth on our roads; blacktop is too expensive and takes to much time on our roads and highways fixing and replacing it! If we go to a cement topping on our local roads and sidewalks, the wear time can be as much as 10 times longer. Lets run the numbers!

Electrical and water infrastructure need ongoing 100 percent maintenance programs and not let things get behind where we end up with expensive backlogs of maintenance and replacement. We have been getting grants for sewer and water and need to continue to maximize that cash flow to our advantage.

What should the city do to meet the needs of the citizens?

We have an impressive array of public services to choose from including our Parks and Rec department, various non-profits and native corporations, etc. Quality of life for the people that live here and our large tourism population which comes from all over the world are top priorities. We must continue to give thought, too, and improve our wonderful local trails system. Seward is developing a reputation not only for arts and music but also as an adventure tourism destination and starting point. Protect our fisheries, build our trails and maintaining our quality of life, support this sector. Also efficiencies and economies of scale must be taken advantage of to save the citizens money and lower costs on services to Seward’s citizens!
