Seward Mariners’ Memorial

Work on the compass rose, as shown in the above drawing, is underway at the Seward Mariners’Memorial.

Rasmuson Foundation awarded a $20,000 challenge grant to the Seward Mariners’ Memorial project last month. Through the grant, the Rasmuson Foundation will match dollar-for-dollar, up to $20,000, each contribution raised from now until May 31,

Last month, Harmon Construction began work on the 75-foot diameter compass rose landscape platform surrounding the lighthouse. Completion of the compass rose is scheduled later this summer.

The Seward Mariners’ Memorial is on undeveloped city property on the south harbor uplands with a panoramic view of Resurrection Bay. Memorial plaques honoring the memory of Seward mariners or individuals who have contributed to local seafaring history or maritime industry line the inside walls of the lighthouse.

Completion of the project involves construction of a wave wall, landscaping with benches, installation of a ship’s bell and artistic enhancements.

The Seward Mariners’ Memorial is under the auspices of 2003 Seward Centennial 501(c)3. For information or to make a contribution, visit sewardmarinersmemorial.org or contact Nancy Erickson at 491-1639.
