Halibut tourney comeback continues

ONE-SHOT Photography

This 196.6-pound halibut netted Mike Smiley $10,000 in the 2012 Seward Halibut Tournament. Smiley will be back this June to defend his crown along with Captain Woody and ProFish-n-Sea Charters.

The Seward Chamber of Commerce’s Halibut Tournament is in its sixth year since a 2007 reboot and starts June 1, running the length of the month and facilitated by a dedicated staff of volunteers. Good sized halibut are tagged, 13 in all this year, and can be caught to garner prizes. The largest halibut of the day also gets a prize and the largest halibut of the tournament wins the procurer $10,000. There are also prizes for runners-up and charter operators. Tickets are available singly for $10 or three for $25 and are available from the dockside chamber booth from 6 to 8 a.m. every morning of the month of June.

Tickets are also available from J-dock, The Fish House, Day Barge Company, Aurora Charters, Seward Resort and other Charter operators. For information, call the Seward Chamber of Commerce at 224-3051 or visit
