Volunteers are an essential ingredient

At the Seward Senior Citizens Center Liza and Lois Schuldt as well as Nell Watsjold have fun with the Mardi Gras theme for the center’s 2013 Volunteer Appreciation Day.

Every year at Seward Senior Center, we drum up a new theme to recognize and entertain our volunteers, since they have committed hours of entertaining us. So we picked up the playful Mardi Gras theme this year, dined on gumbo and corn bread with honey butter and finished off the meal with chocolate pecan bourbon pie, created by pastry chef, Beth Johnson, another silent volunteer for the center.

The afternoon lunch began with Roma Clark, the volunteer coordinator attempting her rusty French, and introduced Mayor Seaward who shared with the group his memories of his mother volunteering in their respective community. Each volunteer was asked to stand and was recognized for their dedicated services, described as: energetic, wise, industrious, mysterious and loving.

Every year, more than 40 folks will volunteer at the center in the capacity of a driver, cook, front desk, crafts and fundraising. Volunteers are the icing on the cake and leave behind a sweet taste.
