Seward’s top notch port attracts vessels of all sorts

In just four days last week the Port of Seward saw a variety of vessels in port for work, repairs, loading and unloading, and recreation.

The Coast Guard vessels Maple and Sycamore were in port for maintenance and repairs.

The Panamanian flagged bulk carrier Verace procured a load of coal and cast off bound for Chile. The coal is mined at Usibelli Mine in Healy and transported to Seward on Alaska Railroad.

Anderson tug boats aided the ships navigating in Resurrection Bay and the port.

A barge loaded with containers and another with heavy equipment motored in.

In the Small Boat Harbor fishing boats from Western Alaska were moored.

At Seward Marine Industrial Center and Seward Ships the Coast Guard Cutter Hickory, State of Alaska Wildlife Enforcement, The Enforcer and other vessels underwent maintenance and repairs.

In the summer the railroad dock ties up over 50 visiting cruise ships, and tour and fish charter boats serve area visitors.

The offloading of fish at Seward place the port 22nd in the nation for seafood landings.

Along with all the human and vessel activities, sea otters cavort and forage along the shore.
