Lowell Creek Flood, 1917

One of the most damaging floods in Seward occurred in September 1917. At that time Lowell Creek ran through Seward, down what is now Jefferson Street. A light rain started on Sept. 6, which continued to get heavier until, Sunday, Sept. 9. Lowell Creek turned into a raging torrent, washing out everything in its path, bridges, trees, houses, light poles, telephone poles and railroad tracks.

Lowell Creek turned into a raging torrent, washing out everything in its path, bridges, trees, houses, light poles, telephone poles and railroad tracks. It was several days before the flood waters receded. Telephone service resumed on Sept. 19, but it took until Oct. 25 for electrical service to be reestablished. The trees ripped out along the Creek and that was scattered along the beach by the flood were cut up by townspeople, providing fuel for the coming winter.
