With two shotgun blasts to signal the beginning of the 2012 Seward Silver Salmon Derby at 6 a.m. Saturday, the big boats, little boats, mid-size boats, charters, sailboats, skiffs and Zodiacs were off to their skippers’ targeted spot to catch the cohos.

Instead of rain this year, the weather for the first few days of Derby was quite sunny and warm, making for extraordinarily beautiful days out on the water.
Stalwart volunteers are manning the Derby Booth and work at all manner of tasks to make for a successful Derby.
The entry deadline in the Seward Chamber of Commerce event is Sunday. So there’s still time to haul in that big one for $10,000 or the coveted tagged fish for $50,000.
At press time, the fish to beat was 11-year-old Tristan Borneman’s 15.71 pounder caught at Derby Cove.
