Flood meeting planned
The Seward/Bear Creek Flood Service Area holds its regular board meeting at 7 p.m. Monday, July 16 in the Seaview Plaza Building, Kenai Peninsula Borough Annex Office, Suite 122. On the agenda is Ordinance 2012-28: Amending KPB 16.50.030 to Provide that All Seats of the Seward-Bear Creek Flood Service Area Board Shall be Filled by Residents of the Service Area and Eliminating the Requirement that Four of the Seats be Residents of the City of Seward and Three be Residents of the Rest of the Service Area. The public is invited to attend. Agendas are available at the SBCFSA Office at 302 Railway Ave, Suite 123 between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday or on the SBCFSA Website at www.sewardbearcreekfloodservicearea.org.
Health services offered
Visiting nurse Yvette Barrows NM will visit Seward Public Health Center July 18-20. A walk-in clinic will be held 9 a.m.-noon and 1-4 p.m. on July 19. Appointments are available for July 18 and 20. Call 224-5567 for appointments. The center is at 201 Third, Suite 200. The services are offered on a sliding fee scale, but those who are unable to pay will not be denied services.
Permitting assistance offered
A multi-agency Permitting and Agency Information Day is planned for noon-6 p.m. July 24 at the Legends Building at Fifth and Washington. Agency representatives will be available to assist with project or permit applications and provide information on planning, permitting, floodplain management, national flood insurance, wildlife management, and habitat and wetlands. The event is sponsored by the River Center, Kenai Peninsula Borough, City of Seward, Alaska Department of Fish and Game, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Seward/Bear Creek Flood Service area and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
Bookin’ for Books Trail Run set for July 21
The Bookin’ for Books Trail Run will be at noon July 21. Two courses are offered — a 3.8-mile run from 12 Mile Divide to Grayling Lake Trailhead or a 6.4-mile run from Primrose Campground to Grayling Lake Trailhead. Proceeds from the run benefit the Seward/Moose Pass Imagination Library program. (Imagination Library provides a free book each month to enrolled children from birth to 5 years old.) There is no fee to enter the race. Instead a donation of $30 is suggested. Bib pickup is 5-7 p.m. July 20 at Progressive Chiropractic at Mile 3.6 Seward Highway, or from 9-11 a.m. at the race start locations. Parking will be available near the starting line and transportation will be provided from the finish line back to the parked vehicles. For information contact Lidia Petersen at 362-6201.
VFW officer to visit
VFW State Service Officer, Scott Griffith, will be available at the Seward Job Center from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday, July 16 at Seward Job Center, 809 Second Ave ., No. 102. The officer will answer questions about VA entitlements and provide free assistance in filling out the application forms for VA entitlements. VFW membership is not a requirement for assistance.
Exchange seeks housing
Four students, three young women and one young man, will visit Seward from Obihiro, Japan between July 22 and Aug. 3. Deb Bond, coordinator for the Student Exchange Program for the City of Seward, seeks help in finding home stays for the exchange guests or providing activities and insights into life here in Alaska. Those who can provide housing or want to ask specific questions about homestays can contact Jim Herbert at jherbert@seward.net or 224-8000 until the end of June, or contact Deb Bond at dbond@positiveplaceforkids.com or 224-3704.
Boosters plan golf tourney
The annual Seward Seahawks Athletic Booster Club Golf Tournament will be July 28 at the Birch Ridge Golf Course in Soldotna. The tournament format is a best ball scramble with an 8 a.m. shotgun start. Cost of the tournament is $100, which includes the longest drive contest, the closest to the pin contest and two mulligans. The fundraiser benefits the high school athletic programs. To participate contact Kim Reierson at 224-3228.
