Thank you

Letter to the editor

Dear Kathy Newman,

Thanks for your generous grant, which will help us complete the Seward Mariners’ Memorial. The structure stands proudly on the west breakwater of the harbor, saluting boats as they go by, wishing them a safe journey. The silent testimony of the names honored on the wall inside is a reminder that not all will return. The memorial thus also serves as a warning to seamen to be vigilant of risks encountered as they venture forth from the harbor.

It is fitting that Holland America, a company and country with proud seafaring traditions, contributes toward the completion of our memorial. We hope to mark its base with a large concrete compass rose, adding benches and other landscaping. The site will be a place of quiet contemplation where people can admire the magnificent view while watching the ships come and go. Your donation goes a long way to helping us achieve that goal!

Thanks again,

— Nancy Erickson, President, Seward Mariners’ Memorial Committee
