Summer Solstice Cemetery Tour offered

Seward’s annual Summer Solstice Cemetery Tour is planned for 10:30 p.m. today, weather permitting at the American Legion Cemetery and lasts about an hour. The tour is sponsored by the Seward Community Library Museum and Resurrection Bay Historical Society and is conducted by Lee Poleske. The theme for this year’s tour is the centennial of Seward’s incorporation. The tour will cover four members of the original council of 1912, the first city clerk and other council members and mayors who helped shape Seward’s history.

The tour is free, but there will be a donation jar to take up a collection to help buy a grave marker for Jeannie Paulson, the first woman to be elected to the Seward City Council in 1921. We know she was buried in the IOOF section of the cemetery, but no stone was ever put up and the site of her grave is no longer known. The headstone will be placed in the IOOF section to commemorate her part in Seward’s history.
