First Automobile in Seward — 1915

The first automobile to arrive in Seward was recorded in a photograph used on this post postcard put out by Hetter’s (now the Alaska Shop). The legend on the card reads “April 24th, 1915 arrival of first automobile Seward Alaska.” Mary Barry in Volume II of her “History of Seward” writes that the first automobile in Seward was a black Ford four-door touring car purchased by Pete Ogle, but she goes on to say the first motor truck, bought by Robert Ashland, arrived in Seward on April 30, 1915; although there is a disagreement on the day, there seems little doubt that the truck pictured is that of Mr. Ashland.
