GMO fish dangers are numerous
Letter to the editor
To the editor,
I have recently become aware of House Bill 100 which would prohibit “growing or cultivating genetically modified fish in the state of Alaska.” I support this bill, sponsored by Representative Kawasaki (Fairbanks). This bill was written to protect Alaska’s wild salmon runs from genetically modified (GMO) fish. The dangers of these GMO fish are numerous.
If one of these GMO fish were to escape in to the wild, it would be disastrous to the ecosystem. GMO fish are bred to grow faster and eat more than wild fish. Since they eat so much, they would eat all of the wild salmon’s food.
We all support small business right? Well, if House Bill 100 passes, it will prevent big fish farming companies from coming in and taking the jobs of local commercial fisherman.
I urge you as a fellow Alaskan and lover of wildlife to write and call your legislators and tell them that you want House Bill 100 passed!
