Gov. Sarah Palin on May 27 signed into law legislation requiring registered sex offenders to report their e-mail and Internet identifiers with the Alaska Department of Public Safety.
The bill was sponsored by Sen. Bill Wielechowski, D-Anchorage, to help protect children from online predators.
“The Internet gives sex offenders an entirely new venue to hunt for new victims,” Wielechowski said. “The legislation that was signed into law this afternoon erects one more barrier between our kids and the online predators that want to do them harm.”
According to Wielechowski, Alaska has the highest rate of Internet use in the nation and one of the highest rates of sex offenders.
SB 185 also gives judges the ability to require offenders to wear electronic monitoring devices during their probation or parole.
