Barnwell, JV boys shine on skisPublished on January 14th, 2010 By ERIN KNOTEK Seward High school hosted the Seward Seahawk Ski Meet on Saturday at the Mile 12/Divide Ski trails. Kenai Peninsula Borough schools from Homer, Kenai, Skyview and Soldotna plus Anchorage's Grace Christian travelled to compete on trails highly groomed by volunteers of the Seward Nordic Ski Club. Seward High School senior and varsity member Allison Barnwell took top honors among varsity girls by out-skiing Soldotna's Maranda Merkes by one second to grab first place in the 6-kilometer race with a time of 17:53 minutes. Top Seward varisty boys skier Brett Chase was recognized as a top 10 athlete by placing fourth with a time of 15:09 minutes. The Seward boys JV shined by taking first place. Seward's own Samy Pfluger, an exchange student from Germany, took first place in his first-ever ski race with a time of 18:26 in the 6-kilometer race.
